Our Story

Southern Foods was founded in November 1954 by Victor Nussbaum Jr.   Mr. Nussbaum believed that he could create a business to support his growing family by delivering the best meats available to local homes in Greensboro, North Carolina.

With nothing more than his dream, Mr. Nussbaum bought a used pick-up truck, hired a driver for delivery and a girl for the office and started knocking on doors to see if anyone wanted to buy food in a different and better way. Those first few months he had just eight customers.

Slowly the company began to establish a reputation as purveyor of high-quality food. Week by week, month by month the company delivered more and more quality food to an expanding customer list. A few more employees were hired. Another truck was purchased, then a building. Then an addition was put on the building.

After a few years, local restaurants in the Greensboro area began asking Mr. Nussbaum for his hand cut steaks and fresh ground beef. This provided the start for the restaurant division of Southern Foods.

As the business began to grow and change so did the South. Southern Foods soon found itself expanding from Greensboro to all of North and South Carolina, Atlanta, Georgia and southern Virginia.

Under Mr. Nussbaum's guidance, the business continued to grow steadily into one of the largest food service companies in the Southeast, employing over 570 people and supplying thousands of families and many of the finest restaurants in the southeast with quality food.

The home services division eventually became it's own company, Southern Foods At Home, which is now based in Atlanta. Mr. Nussbaum passed away in 2001 but through all the growth and changes one thing he insisted on has and never will change — our commitment to provide our loyal customers with the highest quality food available.

Today, Mr. Nussbaum's legacy lives on with every healthy, delicious steak we deliver to families in Greensboro and throughout the entire south.
